Content:
Students will explore how the concept of beauty has changed over time, and is different across cultures. Students will explore how the media and advertising industry affects our perception of beauty and self-image.
Process:
Students will do this by learning about body image, beauty standards, and fashion/beauty product related media/marketing techniques in an interdisciplinary unit involving Social Studies, Math, and English.. In Social Science classes, students will study beauty standards in other cultures, as well as in American culture over time. In Math, students will study the financial aspects of the beauty industry, making charts and graphs from the statistics they research. In English, students will read articles about the beauty industry, beauty standards in America and in different cultures, and write persuasive or informative essays based on what they've learned.

Students will use what they've learned to create an Anti-Advertisement that highlights and satirizes the unrealistic beauty standards presented by the beauty industry and media..
Students will create an on-campus, student-run thrift store, where students can donate and purchase used clothes.
Students will create a self-portrait that presents students as they believe they SHOULD be seen.
