Investigation |
For our service learning we are addressing a genuine need in our community. As a class we would need to find some data on the amount of families in need of clothing in our community. We could do this by researching how many clothing donation stores are available in our area. This would give us an idea of how many families or individuals are in need of new clothing. The reason this applies to our ITU is because people who have new clothes that they are proud to wear can help give them a positive self image. In our society there are so many conceptions of how people "should" look it is important that people can feel confident in the clothes they wear.

Planning/Preparation |
Students will need to plan the following:
1. Where the store will be located on campus 2. Create their thrift store advertisements 3. Hours of operation - Before school, during lunch, thirty minutes after school 4. Create a schedule for employees (what shift each student will work) |
Action
|
Using an indirect service strategy, at our school site we would begin a clothing drive to collect lightly worn or used clothing. We could have the information broadcasted in the daily announcements so awareness about our clothing drive would be spread quickly and easily to the teachers and student body. Once we have collected clothes for two months we would bring all of the clothes we gathered to a newly created school thrifts store.
|
Reflection |
We would have the students do a quick write about the positive impact the clothing drive will have on the school community. The students could also write whether they would actually use these coupons or not. We would ask the students what they learned from this activity about creating a positive self-image in our school.
|
Demonstration/Celebration |
The culmination of the student's efforts would be rewarded by allowing students to receive a coupon for participating in classroom activities. The coupons would be good for one article or accessory of the students choice in the school thrift store.
|
Evaluation |
Our evaluation of the students would have 3 components.
1. Student participation in the operation of the school thrift store 2. Advertising the school thrift store and promote a clothing recycling campaign 3. Wear clothes that were purchased at the store to promote the use of the school thrift store. |
