Welcome- Students, Parents, and Colleagues!
Check out how current technology is transforming normal, beautiful women into an unattainable barbie.
This integrated thematic unit of study is focused on the changing body image in America, and how technology is affecting beauty standards and adolescent self worth. By constructing a unit using interdisciplinary methods, students will gain a deepened understanding of the content presented in the unit.
During this unit of study, students will be thinking metacognitively about the affect of being bombarded by unrealistic images of beauty has on their self-image and self-worth. High school is a formative time in the lives of teenagers. They are trying to feel socially accepted and confident with their changing bodies. The theme of this unit is an essential issue to address with adolescents in order to encourage them to think critically about how they view themselves, why they view themselves in a particular way and where insecurities may come from. The goal of the unit is to realize that beauty isn't always what they see on the cover of People magazine.
Our unit of study will address the following questions: What is beauty? What has caused beauty standards to change over time? How does advertising and social media negatively or positively affect self-image of teenagers. How can we influence other students on campus to think critically about how media plays a part of self-esteem?
The theme of this unit will embedded in a variety of student activities across their history, English and mathematics classes. They will be participating in cooperating learning activities that require them to analyze current beauty standards and to form their working definition of beauty. Students will be involved in a service learning project where they run a student thrift store. Additionally, art will be incorporated into the unit when they create an "anti-ad" and display the ads on campus in order to encourage other students to question ideas of beauty.
